Update, January 17, 2005
Posted over 5 years ago on January 17th, 2005 at 8:08 am » Editorial, Music, Current Events, Personal, Old Stuff, Politics.Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! As promised, Harold provides us with an update.
As I take time to reflect on Dr. King’s famous “I have a dream” speech, it seems that we as a society have seriously deviated from Dr. King’s vision of a society free from racial inequalities. We have schools up through the university level with multiculturalism requirements in their curricula which serve to emphasize the differences between people based on skin color and culture. Our society champions affirmative action, which further classifies people based on ethnic background. How can a society that intends to honor Dr. King’s legacy still support such divisive practices? Food for thought, anyway.
As for my resolutions for 2005, progress come slowly, but surely–for the most part.
1. This update comes within two weeks of my first post of the year, as well as within the first month, so this resolution seems easy enough to maintain thus far. More substantively, I hope to have visitor comments enabled for these updates by the end of the week so you can congratulate me on my progress or berate me on my lack thereof…or whatever, so long as it’s safe for the whole family.
2. Although I have become a tad more vigilant as to what I eat, it certainly becomes difficult when friends invite you out to eat at nice restaurants! Not that I’m complaining, of course, but I will probably have to step up incorporating exercise into my daily routine.
3. I seem to be having problems figuring out if my guitar is properly tuned. I think I’ll either need to consult someone who knows a thing or two about guitars, or get one of those fancy tuning devices.
5. I already have an idea for a short story. I hope to have at least a synopsis or a first page by my next website update in two weeks.
Uh…if U2 can skip from three to fourteen, I can skip from three to five. Yup yup.
About that Vertigo song, I wonder what it’d sound like if Jerry Lewis tried to sing it…
Until next time…

Well, it’s the end of the week, and comments seem to be working in this area of my website.
I thought it was interesting that Ward Connerly, after fighting for the end of racial preferences in the UC system, retired from the UC Board of Regents in a week when the nation remembered Dr. King.
I also found it eerie that Jerry Lewis appeared on Letterman this week as well.
