Site redesign: 5.0

Haroldchow.com version 5.0 has arrived!

Welcome to my newly redesigned website! I have finally gotten around to creating a new design for my website, as well as restructuring things behind the scenes to make future updates a bit easier.

(Warning: Technobabble ahead!) First of all, the previous design had severe limitations due to HTML and Javascript concerns. With most of the design implemented with Frames and Tables, the structure became quite rigid and difficult to manipulate safely with CSS. It also had a lot of script solely to feed a different background (daytime or nighttime) based on the time of day. I addressed this by cleaning up the Javascript quite a bit and incorporating more CSS design elements, to the point of removing most of the Tables from the site.

Second, the site still used quite a bit of SHTML instead of PHP. Instead of taking the time to reinvent the wheel, I have decided to use WordPress. Originally just intending to avoid rewriting my blog scripts, WordPress now provides some very useful CMS (content management) functionality as well.

Lastly, I wanted to incorporate some Web 2.0 action to show that this former Web-slinger has still got it. Use the Contact button to shoot me an e-mail and you’ll see what I mean! At the very least, going this route with this form should make it a little more difficult for spam bots to access it.

Remaining tasks: convert a couple of sections over to the new format, redesign my law office website, redesign my writing website, squash any bugs related with moving everything around, and then look into making more improvements to the site (including bringing back day/night differences in appearance).

Also of note, I have switched web hosts, so please contact me if you notice anything unusual. I anticipate having to fix a lot of broken links.
